WOOD WOOD x ASICS GT-2160

Named after the interior of their very first makeshift ‘store’, Karl-Oskar Olsen and Brian SS Jensen founded Wood Wood in 2002. Wood Wood’s ambition has been to influence culture through contemporary, accessible streetwear and community-driven projects, oftentimes inspired by the subcultures of the 90’s.

Music, art, skateboarding and graffiti all played a big part in shaping the brand from the outset –founding a brand based on authenticity and at creating the best product possible at every stage. Both founders were working in design when they fell into selling a container-load of white t-shirts, which they figured would sell quicker if they printed something on them… and so Wood Wood was born.

Wood Wood was founded in Nørrebro, Copenhagen and has since expanded to include stores in Aarhus, Berlin and London. All of these locations are integral to their community, which continues to evolve through local involvement. Since its inception Wood Wood’s ambition has been to influence culture through contemporary, accessible streetwear and community-driven projects. In-line with the brand’s purpose, Wood Wood has been a part of some incredible collabs with established brands and independent artists to develop products and non-commercial activations which carry their brand’s essence.

ASICS and Wood Wood have teamed up for the first time since 2017 to release the new GT-2160 collaboration sneaker. The sneaker is brought to life in their joint campaign celebrating body and movement. The sneaker was first unveiled at Wood Wood’s AW24 show during Copenhagen Fashion Week in January.

A celebration of body and movement, the campaign, shot by Danish photographer Philip Messman, features a cast of ballet dancers and trampoline jumpers. Interlinking both the ASICS brand messaging of uplifting the mind through movement and visualizing the contemporary lifestyle and aesthetic of the Wood Wood universe. This poetic series of images playfully portray the sneakers in a new context, outside the worlds of fashion or sport and embody feelings of both calmness and intensity.

“I see this as a continuation of the collaboration from 2017. Back then we did 2 colourways of the DS-Trainer, which were loosely inspired by the aesthetics of late 90´s media players and vintage Dieter Rams designed electronics respectively”. - Brian SS Jensen.

For this collaboration sneaker, the two colourways that were previously used in their 2017 collaboration have been reinterpreted and merged into one. Various tones of greige are subtly juxtaposed by small pops of colour, featuring the classic silver tones that are synonymous with the original sleek design language that is characterized by references to the ASICS archive.

“I believe the original GT-2160 came out around 2010, to me this model still feels very fresh. I am a big fan of ASICS running shoes – especially from around this time, and was immediately drawn to the GT-2160 when I first saw the sample. I find it interesting that although many of the designs from this era are actually kind of hard to distinguish from each other, they all have this very distinct aesthetic that is unique to ASICS”. - Brian SS Jensen.
