Mongoose x Vans
Mongoose and Vans, two iconic brands that popularised Southern California BMX and skate culture, have teamed up with designer Our Legends to create a collection of special edition footwear to celebrate their shared heritage.
In 1966, Vans was born with its first production shoe model, the Style #44 DX, which took the skateboarding world by storm and went on to become the legendary Authentic. In 1974, Mongoose came to life with its groundbreaking Motomag wheels, which ultimately transformed the sport of BMX and defined the aesthetics of the era in action sports. This month, the brands come together to commemorate these bold, foundational styles in the form of classic Mongoose colourways on the original Authentic silhouette.
Each Authentic 44 DX shoe in the collection represents a time in Mongoose’s rich history as innovators in BMX and action sports. The black Authentic 44 DX is inspired by the bike graphics and stickers first introduced in the 1970’s that had orange and yellow rainbow colouring with black branding and reflective details. The 1980’s-inspired colourway ties back to the Americana jerseys that the Mongoose BMX race team wore, featuring bold red and blue checkerboard with the brand’s animated mascot, Maurice, on the sidewall. Lastly, the team highlights the Mongoose colour and graphics that best personify the early 1990’s era. The two-tone turquoise and pink checkerboard design is a loose reissue from colours used in past Mongoose advertisements.
“It was amazing to partner with Vans and Mongoose to bring these special edition shoe collections and heritage stories to life,” said Chad “Shoes” Blawas, creative studio director for Our Legends. “We wanted to pay homage to both of these iconic brands with designs that reflected multiple eras, and we truly feel we accomplished that and are offering collections that can be enjoyed by BMX core and lifestyle enthusiasts around the globe.”
The Mongoose x Vans collections drops Friday 12 August in CPT, JHB and online. R1299 each.
