Shelflife Artist Tee Series: 16 'Henry Hamilton'
The final edition of our 2023 Artist Tee Series is here, and brings us a drop as unique as the creator himself! Meet our good friend, Henry Hamilton, who amongst his other works, uses painting and tapestry as tools to showcase his graffiti and fun illustrations. Alongside his tee, you also stand a chance to win his one of a kind, hand tufted rug, made specifically for this drop.
In the lead up to his ‘Shelflife Artist Tee 15,’ we met up with Henry to find out about his artistic journey born from his love for colours, experimenting with various art-forms and his affinity for drawing inspiration from unlikely places to create pieces that are out of this world (literally).
SL: Who are you and where are you from?
HH: My name is Henry Hamilton and I am an artist from Cape Town.
SL: We know you are a multi-faceted artist. What forms of art and design are you currently practicing?
HH: I enjoy painting, illustrating and making tufted rugs and wall hangings with yarn.
SL: Tell us a little bit about your design and art history and how you got to where you are?
HH: I got into art through painting graffiti when I was younger. I was influenced by the bright colours and I was fascinated me how it was done without anyone seeing.
I developed a more illustrative style creating imaginary worlds with my paintings. In 2021 I got into making art with yarn for using a punch needle and then moving on to using a tufting gun.
SL: Name 3 of your favorite influences at the moment.
HH: I am influenced by stories from the paranormal world, aliens and graffiti culture.
SL: If you could work with any artist in the world who would it be and why?
HH: I would like to work with a Brazilian artist called NIHAO. I am a big fan of her loose playful cartoony style and the scenarios she puts her character into.
SL: One piece of advice for anyone starting out as an artist today?
HH: I would say try and develop your own unique style and not to just copy what you see other artists doing. Keep producing work, the hard work will pay off one day!
