For Philly natives, UBIQ needs no introduction. For almost two decades now, founder John Lee has been crafting a singular presence for refined sneaker culture on the East Coast of the United States. From its original moorings in the Gallery Mall to its current Walnut Street home and second store in Washington DC, UBIQ’s street- and subculture influences remain the same: from skateboarding to hip-hop, urban architecture to local sports teams.
This passionate approach to wide-ranging inspirations provides the lens through which UBIQ and adidas Consortium have created their first shoe together, a new take on the Crazy BYW. The Crazy BYW was inspired in part by the Kobe Bryant KB 8 signature shoe, which was later reborn as the Crazy 8. The UBIQ iteration boasts a blend of technical textiles with reflective under and overlays, while the high-performance sole replicates the silhouette of early-2000s basketball sneakers – brought into the present through the use of BOOST technology.
For the UBIQ version, founder John Lee looks to both his North American and South Korean heritage, exploring the peaceful, reconciliatory themes at the heart of the ‘sister cities’ initiative. The program was begun in 1947 as a way of fostering friendship and understanding between cultures. UBIQ uses the Crazy BYW as a canvas to pay homage to the pairing of Incheon and Seoul in South Korea with Philadelphia and Washington DC in the US, respectively.
The use of highly reflective 3M materials on the engineered exterior of the uppers are supposed to represent the United States, while the interior and tongue incorporate Korean typography. The sock liner features a yin yang-style colour split, with the bold palette of blues and reds taking inspiration from the traditional Korean obangsaek colour spectrum. The result is a shoe that captures the open-minded, global outlook of both the Sister Cities initiative and adidas Consortium alike.
