WORLDART is holding an exhibition next week to showcase the work of a group of local graffiti artists considered by their peers as some of the most active and respected in their field at present. Artists participating include Nardstar*, Bush, Slegh, Conform, 2KILER, Anoy, Caso, Dino, Mors, Smet, ZNK and Zombie.
As the name suggest, the event aims to highlight the fact that graffiti and covering it up gets a lot more attention than drugs and crime do. Graffiti artists in Cape Town face fines of up to R50 000 or six months imprisonment when caught painting on walls without the city’s approval – numbers that seem rather excessive when comparing it with the consequences of drug abuse in public spaces.
Due to this, most writers explore the city and its abandoned locations in order to practice their art. By travelling to these obscure places, graffiti artists actually get to see the real issues that the government is not addressing, opting rather to improve the appearance of the city by combatting graffiti.
The 'Worse Than Heroin' Exhibition is happening next week First Thursday, 5 September at WORLDART, 54 Church Street, CBD Cape Town. 6pm - 9pm.
