Winners from Nikon's Small World Photography Competition 2019
Started in 1975, Nikon’s Small World Photography Competition sheds light on the talents and specialties of photomicrographers coming from a wide array of scientific disciplines. And they just announced their winner, as well as 14 other runners-up of tiny photographs.

A panel of expert judges went through 2000 microscope visuals from amateur and professional photographers from across the globe. Microscopy technician Teresa Agoda took home first prize (top) for her photo of a developing turtle embryo, while second place was taken by Dr. Igo Siwanowicz for his composite image of three single-cell freshwater protozoans (above). An American alligator embryo at around 20 days of development took home third place, photographed by Daniel Smith Paredes. Check out all top 15 right now and try guess what the photographs are of before seeing! It's tricky.
