Instagram doesn't seem happy with just adding new features to their main app. Having just released dark mode for IG, the company has moved their sights onto improving communication with your close friends with their brand new app. And yes, it does sync with your Instagram DMs.
What if Instagram could automatically tell your close friends when you’re at home, work, on the move or even free to hang out? That’s the idea behind Threads. The app is built around showing your activity and sending photos to your mates, with the homepage displaying the camera feed, with quick-press contacts along the bottom. There are also options for how long the photo will be available for, similar to DMs and of course, Snapchat.
Threads offers two brand new features called Status and Auto Status that allow you to manually set an emoji as an away message to show Close Friends what you’re up to, or opt in to letting Instagram select one automatically based on your location, accelerometer and even your phone’s battery level. All shared only to the people you want to share this personal info to - your close friends.
The app still remains vague enough though. It leaves out a map or any exact location sharing to avoid being creepy. It should also be noted that Instagram is doubling down on its Close Friends feature which was introduced to Instagram last year. Hopefully Close Friends will allow Threads to see more usage, as many will remember Instagram shutting down its standalone DM app this year due to low usage.
Threads is definitely Instagram and Facebook’s attempt to take on Snapchat. The app allows you to send photos and messages to your close friends in rapid-fire speeds - something Snapchat is famous for. The added bonus is of course that it syncs with the main Instagram app which is used by nearly everyone.
