The Loeries Awards took place over the weekend and SA was taking home gold! Loeries celebrates the best of advertising in Africa and the Middle East in the past year in 14 categories including print media, television, and digital. Out of about 100 video entries, 4 South Africans won gold and one even won a Grand Prix too - the highest award you can get. The whole event saw a staggering 2,500 entries from 646 brands represented by 281 agencies in 15 countries across Africa and the Middle East - so it really is a big achievement if you win.

This ad was actually banned in South Africa by the Advertising Regulatory Board because it “trivialises an issue that is triggering an upsetting for many South African people” – colonisation. The advert aims to turn Colonisation on its head, with 'Big John' traveling across the oceans to 'discover' Europe from Africa. Created by Joe Public.
The advert by MTN is also brilliant! It sees a clearly high man in a flat full of smoke (4:20 just past) , calling his friend to wish him happy birthday, then forget he called and do it all again. It plays into the tagline of, “We won’t judge your reasons for needing double your data.” Created by: TBWA\Hunt\Lascaris Johannesburg.
Another chicken ad courtesy of Nandos, who are no stranger to these awards either. This advertisement has been out for a while and pokes fun at other brands and their new marketing efforts, namely ABSA's 'Africanacity' Series Absolut Vodka. Nandos took home the Grand Prix for their advertisement. Created by: M&C Saatchi Abel.
A 7-minute short film about the dangers of underage drinking also took home a gold. Called 'VUKA', the advert was commissioned by South African Breweries by Joe Public. It was unfortunately not televised but you can see it below.
