In the pursuit design excellence and innovation, Toronto’s Design Museum, Design Exchange, presents the world’s first designer toy exhibition; “This Is Not A Toy”. Curators Jon Wee Tom and DX Associate Curator Sara Nickelson worked in collaboration with guest curator, hip-hop artist Pharrell Williams, to shed light into the world of designer toys, increasing awareness of the urban vinyl toy movement and shifting perspectives toward recognizing it as contemporary art form.
For the first time, designer toys are displayed within the setting of a museum, allowing viewers to explore the conventional concept of a toy and challenge its parameters as a medium for communication and expression. ‘This Is Not a Toy’ acknowledges designer toys as exclusive pieces that extend beyond the realm of a plaything, and rest somewhere between fine art and design objects.
The exhibition features an array of pieces, such as sculptures, figures and paintings from esteemed world-renowned artists and designers; including KAWS, Takashi Murakami, Yoshiotomo Nara, FriendsWithYou, Huck Gee, Coarse, Frank Kozik, Misaki Kawai, DOMA, Bill McMullen; with a selection of pieces donated by Pharrell Williams from his personal collection.
The exhibition, which opened on February 7th, runs until May 19th.
