E3, the world's biggest gaming conference, has been happening this week. Every year E3 sees mind-blowing announcements from Xbox, PC and PlayStation, as well as first looks at upcoming highly-anticipated video games. Xbox gave some insight into their next generation of console (Project Scarlett), as well as announcing their new Elite Controller. But what excited many in the crowds and online was the trailer for 'Marvel's Avengers', the franchise's latest video game. But some fans weren't feeling the execution.
Notably, the character models for the Avengers are drastically different than their Marvel Cinematic Universe counterparts. So no Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark or Chris Evans as Captain America. Instead, Crystal Dynamics has created custom looks for each character. Fans are divided on this front.
The plotline seems to very loosely borrow some narrative threads from Marvel films like Avengers: Age of Ultron and Captain America: Civil War. In the game, the Avengers are blamed for an attack and question the responsibility and accountability of superheroes in modern society.
Yet it sounds like the storyline will be unique to the Marvel universe. Crystal Dynamics studio says the game is definitely to be enjoyed with friends though, with four-player online co-op play. It is also reported that there will be numerous games in the series, with a multi-year planned for the narrative. However, it's stated that new characters and regions will be 'mostly' free, and there won’t be any loot boxes draining your real money.
Among the playable characters includes Captain America, Iron Man, the Hulk, Black Widow, and Thor. The studio has recruited some notable voice acting talent, including Troy Baker and Nolan North, to voice the five heroes. The game will be available on PS4, Xbox One, PC and Google Stadia from May 15th, 2020. The wait has begun.
