Basha Uhuru Freedom Festival 2018

Basha Uhuru Freedom Festival 2018
Constitution Hill presents the annual Basha Uhuru Freedom Festival this coming weekend in Joburg. The festival will showcase the youth’s contemporary art, design, film, music and also provides inspirational workshops and entrepreneurial support programmes for young creatives. Fired up by Nando's, the festival is aimed at commemorating the youth of 16 June 1976, and is already in its 6th year.
With youth unemployment as a key focus in national debate, the festival offers an unparalleled youth creative showcase profiling the creative sector as an attractive and viable one for youth to participate in economically.

Starting on 28 June, the festival kicks off with a poster exhibition conceptualised by renowned photographer Jodi Bieber in collaboration with 45 young Joburgers, and designer and curator Brenton Maart. A selection of objects from GALA’s archive, Gay and Lesbian Memory in Action,  forms another exhibition that is also being featured on the opening day. The food and craft market will also be active from the opening day, and will continue for the entire festival.

Following this at 17:00 on the same day is the Nando’s Creative Exchange programme. This exhibition showcases work by Christo Basson, Ludumo Maqabuka, Nkoali Nawa and Nkosinathi Quwe of the Nando’s program. The exhibition aims to show diversity in medium, technique and subject matter, with the underlying thread of ritual tying the works together.
The Basha Uhuru festival will also host the Basha Bacha creative conversations on the 28th and 29th of June. The conversations will centre on the creative entrepreneurs’ programme supported by the Gauteng Enterprise Propeller. Attendance is free but you have to register here beforehand. The 28th at 16:00 also sees Words of Freedom, curated by poet Sabelo Soko.

The film showcase will happen at 20:00 on the 28th and 29th of June. The films include The People vs Patriarchy on the 28th, followed by Five Fingers for Marseilles on the 29th. The festival will then culminate with a concert on the 30th. The line-up is packed with local talent and features: Black Motion, Sho Madjozi, Samthing Soweto, K.O, Skwatta Kamp, Blk Jks, Moonchild Sanelly, Prokid, Zoe Modiga, BCUC, Urban Village, Sun Xa, Radio 123, Muzi, Joshua The I AM and Big Zulu. As well as DJ performances from: iamPH, Speedsta, Akio, Sistamatic, Phatstoki, Rosie Parade, Deniece Marz, Coppashot & Bobotical, DJ Zero and Lubonk.
